The Southern Rhine –
Heart of Western Europe

The Swiss city of Basel enjoys a remarkable setting along the Rhine, at the point where the river bends and three countries – Switzerland, Germany, and France – meet. This compact cultural city is a Western European crossroads, where ideas, cultures, art, and literature have intersected and evolved over centuries.

Beginning in Basel, we travel by train through the southern Rhine Valley to Freiburg, the university town at the foot of the mountains, on the edge of the Black Forest. Here, we experience the region of Baden-Württemberg – one of Germany’s most fascinating federal states, known not only for its natural beauty and cuisine, but also as home to some of the country’s most renowned industrial brands, such as Porsche and Mercedes.

We are only a short distance from the French border and easily cross into Alsace. Here, towns such as Colmar and Strasbourg await, offering a striking blend of German and French influences – expressed in half-timbered houses, cathedrals, museums, restaurants, and excellent wines.

This is a compelling border region, where the course of history is deeply felt and where national boundaries have shifted many times. Few places in Europe offer such a complete experience of the continent’s cultural interplay as the southern Rhine Valley, where German, French, and Swiss traditions meet.
